It’s 2024, What is the client agreement?

We are almost halfway through the year, and it might be a good idea to revisit the coaching agreements. Maybe you’re in the midst of renewing or applying for your coaching credentials or taking inventory of your coaching skills and tools: either way, you need an agreement.

What are the agreements you make about

  • Your professional development?

  • Your coaching services?

  • Your coaching sessions?

Who are your partners in those agreements?

I train, teach, mentor, and supervise coaches, and it is all too common for coaches to assume agreements. Indulge me for a minute.

A client agreement is clear, stated, attended to, and maintained by the coach and the client. Something that “sounds like” a client agreement is not a client agreement.

1) Listen to/ revisit a recorded coaching session (maintaining confidentiality standards, of course).

2) Answer the questions:

  • What is the topic of the session?

  • Who identified the topic? When was it identified?

  • What was the goal/desired outcome of the session?

  • Who identified the goal/outcome of the session? When?

  • Who was successful in the session? How do you know?

  • What does a complete coaching agreement include?
