How do I lose weight with minimal willpower?

The Question

I've heard you talk about losing weight with minimal willpower but I'm not sure how to do it. How do I lose weight with minimal willpower?

The Answer

Thank you for the question. I'm so glad you asked this.

Willpower is a huge topic when it comes to weight loss so let's start by defining it.

What is willpower?

When I looked it up on Google, here's what it said:

"Control exerted to do something or restrain impulses."

As I read that definition, I felt my guard going up inside of me. I was basically gearing up for a fight. Did it have the same effect on you?

Here's the way I think about it...it's like we have these strong urges to do something and we use willpower to fight those urges. We're resisting giving into those urges. It's like there's a battle going on inside of us to do or not do something.

In the case of losing weight, the battle is over whether or not we eat or don't eat foods. And it's like the battle is inside of us between two different brains.

Let's say you have an urge to eat spaghetti.

Brain #1 says: "I want that spaghetti. It looks and tastes so good. I'm going to eat it. And I already know I'll go back and eat seconds because it's going to be that good. I deserve this."

Brain #2 says: "Stop it. I know that spaghetti looks and tastes good but we'll feel like crap if we eat it. Physically we'll feel bloated. And mentally we'll be disappointed in ourselves. If you eat that spaghetti, I'll be so mad at you."

Back and forth these brains argue. And the urge to eat the spaghetti grows stronger.

The battle over the spaghetti is kinda what willpower feels like because we're resisting our urges to eat the spaghetti.

So, that brings me back to your question. You asked, "How do I lose weight with minimal willpower?"

Here's how you do it:

  1. Get clear on your reason for wanting to lose weight in the first place. Your reason must be compelling to you because you'll want to refer to it when things get tough.
  2. Understand that weight loss is a process. And the process consists of The 6 Stages Of Losing Weight. Be kind and patient with yourself as you take yourself through all 6 stages.
  3. Learn how to process and allow urges instead of fighting, battling, and resisting them. When you're in Stages 3 and 4 of The 6 Stages Of Losing Weight you'll learn how to allow and process urges. And when you reach Stage 5, you will have mastered the process.

So, what does this actually look like?

Learning how to do anything new takes practice and it takes time. This is no different.

You'll start your journey using willpower each time you have an urge because that may be normal to you right now. But you'll become aware that you're using willpower and you'll start practicing allowing urges. After time, it'll become your new normal to allow urges.

The Wrap-Up

You can lose weight with minimal willpower.

Start by getting clear on your reason for wanting to lose weight in the first place. Then, take yourself through The 6 Stages Of Losing Weight. When you're in Stages 3 and 4, teach yourself how to allow and process urges.

Keep in mind that willpower is essentially us fighting, battling, or resisting urges we have to do something, like overeat. And using willpower may be normal right now. Make sure you give yourself time and space to learn how to process and allow urges instead of fighting them. After time, it'll become your new normal to allow urges.

Thanks again for your question. I hope my answer helps you.
