Q&A: How can I reach my ideal weight quicker?

The Question

As soon as I reach my ideal weight, my husband and I are going to start trying to get pregnant with our first baby. I've got 25 pounds to lose and I think it'll take me about 6 months. But I really want to start a family as soon as possible. How can I reach my ideal weight quicker?

The Answer

Thank you for the question. And congratulations on making the decision to start a family! What an exciting time for you and your husband.

I want to tell you a little story. You may have heard me talk about this before. But I think it'll really help you in this situation.

Here's the story...

I was losing weight and feeling amazing. I had dropped 2 sizes. I went from a size 12 to a size 8.

So, I decided to schedule a photo shoot for my family and I. I wanted to get some pictures for that years' holiday cards.

I scheduled the photo shoot to be one month from that time. I wanted to give myself another month to drop another size. The goal was a size 6.

The moment I set this goal for myself, I felt like I was in a rush to lose weight. I basically told myself I had to be a size 6 in one month or I was a failure.

You can probably guess what happened...I gained weight and went up a size. I was back at a size 10 for the photo shoot. And I felt like I was a failure.

Let's break it down so you can clearly see why this happened.

I was in a rush to lose weight and my brain was thinking things like, "You're a failure if you don't get to a size 6 in one month."

And thinking like that made me feel like a failure already.

I was drowning in negative energy. And that lead me to eat to try to feel better.

Food has a way of numbing our feelings, at least for a few minutes anyway.

So, the morale of the story is never be in a rush to lose weight. Because the negative energy it generates may cause you to overeat.

Now, I want to be clear about one thing. The fact that I wanted to get to a size 6 within a month wasn't the problem. It's good to have a specific, measurable goal. The problem was with my mindset and being in a rush.

You can have a specific, measurable goal like mine but I recommend you focus on your mindset while you're trying to achieve that goal. And your mindset should not include being in a rush.

In your case, your goal is to lose 25 pounds in 6 months. That's specific and measurable.

The next thing you'll want to do is create a plan for how you'll achieve your goal. You can read How To Create Your Weight Loss Plan for more support on this.

Once you have your plan, you'll want to focus on your mindset. Watch out for those negative thoughts that creep in and make you feel rushed to lose weight. You are not rushed. You are a woman with a goal, a plan, and an important why.

The Wrap-Up

Never be in a rush to lose weight because it will likely give you the opposite results.

Create a clear, measurable goal. Create your plan for how you'll achieve your goal. Then, focus on your mindset.

You'll get there. Just remember your why. You've got an amazing reason why you're doing this...starting a family!

Thanks again for your question. I hope my answer helps you.
