Q&A: What's the deal with intermittent fasting?

I've heard people talk about intermittent fasting. I kinda know what it is but I'm hoping you can fill in the blanks for me. I want to know what it is and why it's important when trying to lose weight. What's the deal with intermittent fasting?

Thank you for the question. This is a big question that I can answer a few different ways. I'll do my best to answer it as simple as possible.

Intermittent fasting is basically when you don't put food (or sugary drinks) into your body for extended periods of time. 

Most people are already doing this when they sleep at night. And some people decide to extend that time even further after they wake up in the morning.

Let me show you what I mean. 

Scenario 1:

  • 6:00 PM - You finish eating your last meal of the day
  • 10:00 PM - You go to bed
  • 6:00 AM (the next day) - You wake up and eat your first meal of the day.

In scenario 1, you didn't eat or drink sugary drinks for 12 hours. This can be considered intermittent fasting. 

Scenario 2:

  • 6:00 PM - You finish eating your last meal of the day
  • 10:00 PM - You go to bed
  • 6:00 AM (the next day) - You wake up.
  • 10:00 AM - You eat your first meal of the day.

In scenario 2, you didn't eat or drink sugary drinks for 16 hours. This can also be considered intermittent fasting. 

There are many benefits of intermittent fasting but the main benefit can be summed up with one word: hormones. 

Intermittent fasting gives the body a break from foods and drinks that cause our hormones levels to rise and make it more difficult for us to lose weight. 

If intermittent fasting is something you want to do, I recommend you fast between 12-16 hours at a time. No more than that.
