Q&A: How do I eat healthy when I'm traveling?

The Question

My family and I are going on vacation for a week. We're driving to the beach, renting a house there, and spending the entire time relaxing. I'm excited to go but I'm also a little nervous about overeating on my trip. How do I eat healthy when I'm traveling?

The Answer

Thank you for the question. Sounds like this is going to be an amazing trip!

I'm glad you sent me some of the specifics of your trip because I'll be able to give you a better answer.

Let's break your trip down into three separate trips.

Trip #1: Drive from home to the beach

One of the most important things a person can do is to plan their meals at least 24 hours in advance. This is because you'll likely be using the part of your brain that makes decisions that will benefit your long term goals.

So, plan what you'll eat on the drive in advance. Prepare it in advance and bring it along in a cooler.

Trip #2: A week in the house rental

I'm assuming the house you'll be staying in has a refrigerator. If this is the case, then make sure you plan your meals at least 24 hours in advance. And when you arrive at your destination, unpack and get settled, then go to the grocery store. Get everything you need for the week that'll allow you to stick to your plan.

If you and your family want to go out to a restaurant for dinner while you're there, no problem. Choose which restaurant at least 24 hours in advance. Look at their menu on their website and pre-select what you'll eat. Make sure to adjust your plan by writing down what you'll eat.

Trip #3: Drive back home from the beach

By the end of your trip, you may be tired. I totally understand if you are. And that's exactly why you must continue to plan what you'll eat in advance.

When we get tired, our brains tend to make decisions that don't benefit our long term goals. Don't put yourself in that position.

Plan what you'll eat before the drive back home from the beach. Prepare it in advance and bring it along in a cooler.

Focus On Your Mindset

Before you leave for your trip, I recommend you take a few minutes to prepare yourself. Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What do I believe is normal when it comes to eating while traveling?
  2. What challenges will I face on my trip when it comes to food?
  3. What are my decisions ahead of time for how I'll handle those challenges?
  4. What are 3 intentional thoughts I'll think when I'm faced with challenges?
  5. What advice would my future self give me about this?

Write down your answers to these questions and bring them with you on your trip.

The Wrap-Up

I teach that losing weight and keeping it off forever is all about creating a new healthy lifestyle for yourself. And if traveling is part of your life, then you'll need to work that into your plan.

Wherever you go, and whatever you do, you can do this. Start by creating a traveling plan for each part of your trip. Then, focus on your mindset every step of the way.

We can stick to our plans even when we're traveling. It's all about planning ahead of time and using that part of our brains that make decisions that benefit our long term goals.

Thanks again for your question. I hope my answer helps you. And I hope you have an amazing trip!
