Hey everybody. Welcome to episode 32.

We are back. I am so excited to be back. A few weeks ago, I had a baby and took a break from the podcast as you know, and now I'm back and I've got a lot of really exciting things coming up for you in the next couple of weeks that I know you're going to love.

But before I talk about that, I just want to quickly tell you what's been happening here in my house. A couple of weeks ago, I woke up, it was like 5:00 or 6:00 in the morning, and my water partially broke, and then I labored from home all day long and it kind of broke a little bit here and there all day long. And then around four, we went to the hospital.

Just a couple hours later, our son was born around 8:32 PM. So now we have two boys at home and it's been such an interesting journey the last couple of weeks.

A couple podcasts ago, I did a whole episode on major life transitions and if you haven't listened to that, I definitely recommend you go back and listen to that one if you're going through a major life transition yourself because a lot of the things I talked about there were completely spot on.

Although we've been really happy and proud to have Nico join our family, we have definitely dealt with some processing of loss and grief for what our life used to look like, both my husband and me and our four and a half year old son.

So there was a lot of emotions the last couple of weeks and I think we've worked through most of those, we've processed most of those, and we're all kind of in a really good place right now to move forward with the next phase.

But again, if you're going through a major life transition right now, definitely go back and listen to that episode I did a few episodes back because I think it'll really help you. And please share that one with anyone you think it might benefit.

Ok. So, that's the super quick overview of what's been happening over here. I've got two boys now. I'm a mom of two little boys. It's pretty awesome. Lots of fun every single day.

And that leads me perfectly into today's topic. I want to talk to you today about before and after pictures, and this is going to be a very quick episode, but as I've been starting to plan out my own weight loss journey, I've been looking kind of at the internet, I scroll on Instagram sometimes. I don't spend a lot of time on there, but I definitely go on there sometimes. And I see a lot of before and after pictures.

People before they've lost their weight and then after they've lost their weight. There's these before and after pictures all over the internet can be motivational. They can be inspirational, don't get me wrong. But they are not always super healthy for our brains to see, and let me talk about why.

Here's what happens with a lot of people. So you see a before and after picture, your brain immediately gets excited and motivated and inspired, and it's like climbing this mountain. Yay! Super excited. I'm at the top of the mountain. This is awesome. Look at this! Look what can be done.

And then it starts to go down on the other side of the mountain, right? It starts to compare, starts to compare ourselves, it starts to compare our bodies, it starts to compare our whole like weight loss journey and the process in terms of oh, it might've been easier for that person or quicker or whatever our brain tells us at the time.

Then we start beating ourselves up for how we look and how we haven't had that progress or that transformation. So we beat ourselves up pretty good.

And then as we're going down the bottom of that hill, that emotional hill, our brain starts to falsely think that it was easy or quick for the person in the before and after pictures. It's like oh, boom, boom, right? Before, after, boom, boom. There's no space in between there in the photos.

When in reality, when you go through the weight loss process, there's a huge space in between. There's a huge path that you must walk down that you must take to get from A to B. It's not just like boom, boom, before, after. There is lots of work, lots of determination, dedication, commitment. There's a lot of pain and just feeling like terrible every single day. There's a lot that goes into that process.

If you notice this is happening to you, where you're looking at these before and after photos and you're getting all motivated and inspired, and then you start to drop a little bit and to compare and beating yourself up and falsely thinking that it was quick or easy. If that starts to happen for you, just notice this is happening, notice that this is just a story that you're telling yourself inside your brain. That there is a path in between the before and after. It's not just I weigh 200 pounds and after, the next morning, the next morning I wake up and I'm magically 120 pounds. It does not work like that. It looks like it in the photos but it does not work like that. And I know you know this logically, I know this logically too, but these photos can really play tricks on our brain.

So like I said, just notice if this is happening for you and bring yourself in, remind yourself to focus on you, focus on your journey, focus on what it is going to look like for you. Not everybody's is the same. But it's definitely not going to happen overnight. It didn't for the person you see in the before and after pictures, and it's definitely not going to happen for you. That's not how it works.

Ok. So that's kind of all I wanted to say in this episode. As I am starting my own weight loss process and I'm seeing these pictures all over the internet, I'm like wow, my brain is really playing tricks on me.

I know that I personally have 50 pounds to lose. 50, yes. I put on a lot of weight during my pregnancy. I have 50 pounds to lose and I know that I'm not going to wake up tomorrow and it's going to be gone. It's going to be one pound at a time, and I'm not going to lose one pound a day, that's usually not how it works. It's just one pound at a time, and I'm going to go at my own pace and I'm going to do everything according to what's right for me. And that's exactly what I want for you too.
